History of the Department of Biology and Anatomical Sciences

The Department of Biology and Anatomical Sciences at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences is recognized as one of the pioneering academic units in the country, being among the first departments established to teach anatomical sciences, specifically anatomy, histology, and embryology. With a distinguished legacy, the department has a long-standing reputation as a leading educator at the PhD and MSc levels. Its alumni include numerous distinguished faculty members who serve on the academic boards of anatomical sciences departments at various universities across Iran, underscoring the department's significant and lasting impact on the field in the nation.

A pivotal moment in the department's history occurred in 2007, when it became the first such department in Iran to officially change its name from the Department of Anatomical Sciences to the Department of Biology and Anatomical Sciences. This strategic renaming, proposed by the department head and approved by the university council, marked an expansion of its academic mission. While continuing to accept students in anatomical sciences, the department also began admitting doctoral candidates in Reproductive Biology, broadening its scope and solidifying its position as an innovative leader in medical education.

Reproductive biology has since emerged as a particularly prominent and strategic focus within the department. The decision to admit PhD students in this discipline reflects a forward-looking commitment to developing specialized expertise in an area of critical importance to both basic science and clinical medicine. By integrating reproductive biology into its core graduate offerings, the department has not only diversified its research and teaching portfolio but also positioned itself at the forefront of training highly specialized scientists capable of addressing complex challenges in fertility, development, and reproductive health, both domestically and across the region.
